Conferences
Since 1997, the International Budget Project has organized four major international conferences bringing together groups and researchers from around the world with an interest in applied budget work. All conferences have been funded by the Ford Foundation. The last conference also received financial support from the Open Society Institute.
The first was an opportunity to build up the network and share concerns and experiences and took place in Washington, DC in 1997 with 50 people attending from 15 countries. At the second conference in Cape Town in 1999 the theme was the budget process and the outcome a commitment to developing methods for assessing transparency in the budget process. The third conference attended by 90 delegates from 26 countries, focused on budget analysis techniques and objectives and was designed to clarify the role of budget and tax analysis in anti-poverty work and explore the relationship between budget analysis and grassroots work through examples from a variety of groups. Furthermore, the conference explored the growing interest in combining budget and rights work. The fourth conference took place in Mexico, City in 2003 and it was attended by 140 participants from 40 countries to share the diverse experiences, accomplishments, and challenges of applied budget work by civil society around the world.See below for more details:
